Heavy Rotation 51: Are You Still With Me? Edition

At this point, we’ve done nearly a year’s worth of Heavy Rotations. And you all have been simply fantastic to preach music to. But there has to have been a handful of times when you listened to a track I’ve recommended and thought, “The hell?” Maybe even more than a handful. Perhaps this happens quite frequently but you’re all so worried about me and my obviously unhinged brain that you cover up your dismay with streams of compliments and superlatives.

This volume of the Heavy Rotation is an attempt to explain exactly what the hell is wrong with me.

As you’ve heard so many kids say before, “I’m not like the other kids.” Something broke way back in the day. I never was really betrothed to verse-chorus-verse structures. That went away with the acclimation to industrial music. I never really liked over-production or skillful instrument usage. I was more interested in new noises and ritualistic abuse of common musical references.

My brain says, “We’ve all heard enough rock. Enough techno. Enough whatever, done perfectly and repeatedly. What else have you got?”

This is what I found. These are all formative tracks (and one late arrival) that left my musical psyche horribly mutated. I’ve still got a keen ear for beautifully done music and catchy tunes. But this is the shit it must fight through. And this is the shit I turn down before the neighbors can hear. This is the music I don’t introduce to the new in-laws.

There a few things that any one person can truly call their own, especially in terms of culture. But these are MINE.

I do not expect anyone to walk away from this feeling they’ve found a new “go-to” track for their next social event or even hear anything they’d want to hear again. But god help me, I love these songs.

I thank you in advance for indulging me. I also apologize in advance for any damage done to your stereo equipment or relationships with friends and neighbors.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Upside Down.mp3
This is their first single, which I encountered on their Barbed Wire Kisses compilation. It’s an ear-bleeding statement of intent, in which William and Jim Reid pretty much shove their guitars right through their amps, producing a wall of feedback that steamrolls anything Jimi Hendrix had ever done into an unrecognizable white-noise puddle.

Underneath the racket, which one critic memorably described as “a chainsaw in a hurricane,” there’s a hummable melody and some suitably bleak lyrics. But its the banshee-scream of the feedback that acts like a siren song to me, compelling me to place my head between the speakers until every synapse joins in.

And it probably explains the next tune quite a bit. (Still here? I’ll explain…)

Josh Wink – Higher State of Consciousness (Original Tweakin Acid Funk Mix).mp3
An influential breakbeat/acid house classic, featuring the tortured tones of a Roland bass emulator cut adrift of its factory settings and being made to do unpleasant things to sine waves.

Josh Wink allows it to ride a bit of a groove first before gradually winding it all up into a pulse of piercing tones, the likes of which had only been hinted at by early acid house pioneers like Hardfloor and DJ Pierre. An all-around celebration of making your machine(s) say, “Yes,” rather than simply taking their word for it when they say they shouldn’t.

If I hadn’t already been open to skull-piercing treble tones (thanks Jesus & Mary Chain!), I would never have gotten on board with this one.

Moby – Thousand.mp3
As long as we’re still within arrestable distance of club music, here’s techno popstar Moby, who plays around with his drum machine and ends up in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Fastest Song.”

For everyone who only knows him from Play onward may be surprised by his prolific days as a techno producer/DJ in which he produced several underground techno hits during the formative years of the American rave scene. Some of his best work is collected on Rare:The Collected B-Sides 1989-1993, from which this track is taken.

Thousand relies on little more than an accelerating beat and a parallel diva sample to get the job done. Moby takes the tune around the block a couple of times, opening it all the way up on the straightaways.

Should anyone really do this sort of thing, just because the technology will let them? I doubt it. But some people just have to. Moby is one of them. Should anybody call this “good,” let alone “great”? Of course not. But somebody still will. And that person will most likely be me.

The “Thousand” refers to the beats per minute.

Lightning Bolt – Two Towers.mp3
This nuisance of a band joined my intensely personal (and carefully obscured) heavy rotation thanks to my blog partner RF (who’s back, by the way). He shot this over to me along with a selection of other stuff ranging from the tuneful to the aggravating.

And this is where Lightning Bolt stand. They’re a two-person “band,” one playing a bass guitar and the other, a jazz trap set. What do they sound like? It depends on when you ask. They rarely sound like Primus. They don’t even really sound like their closest analogue, Death From Above 1979.

They sound like a fucked-up thrash band most of the time, but they run some amazing bass-propelled grooves, over which the masked drummer screams unintelligibly. (I can see the line forming now, he said tongue planted firmly in cheek, etc…) This track starts out like the most annoying hardcore track ever, with the guitarist wanking all over the place for about a minute in the most show-offy, tuneless manner possible. (Fingers on the “Next” button…)

But at :55, the track takes off. The song coheres and races off to the next transition, grinding and abrading the edges of a lockstep groove, which falls apart now and then, but seamlessly reassembles and continues, yes, rocking, believe it or not.

By all appearances this should suck. But it does not. Not to me. Not to RF. Not to dozens of fans worldwide. It’s brutal without having the decency to at least be efficient. Seven minutes is a lot to take. Unless you’re me. Or RF. I’m used to seven minutes of minimally changing grooves. I love techno. RF loves him some metal, so he’s used to being smacked around for extended periods as well.

It works like a noisy-ass mantra. It’s a drunken god of war parading through your headspace. It’s all so wrong it has to be right.

Had enough? Well, there’s just one more. And it’s only 11 minutes long. (Cue insane laughter and Persian cat-stroking.)

This is from a last-gasp effort by Skinny Puppy, Canada’s answer to Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. This is before they imploded. But not much before. Last Rights (from which this is taken) is the sound of self-destruction coupling with drug-fueled paranoia and unfocused rage.

This is the last track from the death knell (although they did reform, but for the sake of this post, we’ll pretend they never did). It’s more Cevin Key’s (keybs, percussion) baby than Nivek Ogre’s (lead singer). It’s an incoherent mess of samples and loops, driveby radio signals, reversed and pitch-shifted vocal snippets, random button mashing and good old-fashioned dial-spinning.

Operates much like Cevin Key’s post-Skinny Puppy work, functioning better as nightmarish soundscape than actual tuneage. Hell, he even named his next project after this track. It’s quite a bit to take, all this cacophony. So I’m going to do you a favor.

I don’t really care for the front half of this track myself. I find it to be pointlessly self-indulgent, much like I find most of Download’s (the band) work. Instead of subjecting yourself to something even I wouldn’t put up with, move on to where I think the track redeems itself.

Spin the virtual dial forward to 5:18. You’ll hear the last fading sonics from the first half meeting the most malevolent selection of bass tones which follow it until the end. They pan and sweep and haunt. They pulse and throb, attack and decay.

That is what I love. 5+ minutes of overdriven, mildly distorted bass lines, sweeping through the headphones and into the most damaged recesses of my personal tastes. It’s like hell’s theremin.

I love these sounds. You can’t make them with rock instruments. You have to work pretty hard to make them with banks of electronics. You have to work even harder to ride this sort of limited idea for 5-1/2 glorious minutes.

Welcome back, my friends to the show that never ends, thanks to funding (in whole or in part) from the Hallmark Corporation (who would like to remind you that purchasing only one card for Valentine’s Day is like cheating on your loved one with their ex) and some fine legal negotiations by our retained law firm which have allowed us to achieve Fernando!!!!-esque adulation in exchange for our souls (which were mostly used up anyway).

Fischerspooner – A Kick in the Teeth.mp3
For a couple of performance artists who swear they hate synthesizers, Fischerspooner sure do make some pretty music with them. Another of their pulsing fits of depression, which builds to the singalongiest of choruses.

It’s all about the elegantly stated ennui, ladies and gentlemen. Ennui with a strangely forward-looking twist. Kickstart your headspace.

Zombie Nation – Mas De Todo (Rodelledo Mix).mp3
Zombie Nation (you may remember him from the impossible-to-avoid Kernkraft 400 single from the early-2k’s) has returned with something completely unexpected. Instead of riding the glitch-bandwagon or giving ravers something to “sing” along to, he instead drop this masterful piece of dance floor madness.

So what’s the fucking what? Horns borrowed from a 70’s cop show theme song, riding along to what sounds (to my untrained ears) like a 6/8 beat, topped with fun noises, pitch shifting and shouts of “Mas!”

Another day, another UK electro duo, banging KAOS pads and various instruments in an attempt to out-Lightning Bolt their competitors. Only, you know, good.

Sounding like Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic having its way with the soundtrack from A Clockwork Orange while a shouty student demonstration marches past the windows and directly into a distorted wormhole.

Beat the Devil – Shine in Exile.mp3
Like a languishing Stevie Nicks fronting Clinic while the Fiery Furnaces call out requests. Where else but in New York could a 5-foot 2-inch lead singer combine with a 6-foot 5-inch bassist and produce something that sounds nothing like anything else out there at the moment.

It’s probably the harmonium-as-focal-point. Or the distinct lack of guitar. Either way, it’s knock-you-on-your-ass good. Oh, and Kathie Lee Gifford’s name gets taken in vain about halfway through.

Liars – The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack.mp3
Via Los Angeles by way of Nebraska(?) and finally coalescing in New York, it’s experimental punk/rock/noise/art band, Liars. This particular track travels down the quieter side of their catalog, with predictably fantastic results (he said, carelessly tooting his own horn with one hand while scratching his own back with the other).

Sung low and slow, over a pace that could be generously described as “langorous,” The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack adds yearning to hopelessness and comes up with something transcendent.

Heavy Rotation Vol. 35

Another go-round in our nearly-weekly feature, Heavy Rotation. This 35th edition brings with it the promise of a better life on the offworld colonies and black market ocular implants. Just be aware of those around you, especially those with superhuman strength and hypersensitivity to questions about their mothers.

Sidney Frost – I Miss Mpls.mp3
Normally I wouldn’t recommend minimal techno to the unwashed masses (or the freshly scrubbed, either), as the masses generally tend to point out that “nothing’s happening” or “is that it?” or “still nothing, not even when I do this.” 

This, however, is different. There is indeed a time and a place for minimal techno (specifically: any time in this past decade; Germany), if done well. While this may be short of the hard-banging cheap thrills I normally foist upon you, it does have a lot going on, mainly in between the notes. Listen, if you will, to the distorted and delayed vocal sample. Take an ear gander at the build and release, tastefully appointed and nowhere near garish. 

Perhaps some of this will be lost on your average computer speakers, as music of this genre really demands a nice set of cans and occasionally, mind-altering substances. Barring that, just give it a good listening and see what you think. 

If you like, great! I know where to get more of it and what’s more I know the producer. Personally. Go ahead and step past this velvet rope and ‘roid-raging bouncer. Behold: Sidney Frost, aka my talented DJ/Producer brother. 

Younger than me by far and with the skills that would pay the bills were they able to nail down a solid day job, Sidney Frost has entertained thousands with his minimal techno stylings and tasteful hairdos. He’s become everything I thought I would be back when I consumed my weight in alcohol nightly as the DJ at the local dance club in Midwest Town, USA. 

However, rather than play music he doesn’t like to entertain drunks, Sidney Frost plays music he actually likes to entertain druggies. Which would you prefer to do? Sidney currently splits time between the Twin Cities and Moab, Utah, perversely summering in the South and wintering in the North, like some deranged migratory animal who prefers to have the worst of both worlds. 

This song was his ode to the city he left behind to climb rocks and other such nature stuff in Utah. When summer ended and Sidney returned to his beloved MPLS, he released I Miss Moab on a very-limited 12″ Facebook post. Oh, well. DJs. What can you do with them?

Disco of Doom – In Effect.mp3
While I still have you out on the dancefloor… 

Here’s Disco of Doom, the teaming of producers Tom Real and the Rogue Element, with a dark banging track full of electronic goodness, the likes of which you see rarely these days, as everyone is too busy copying everyone else or filtering perfectly usable (and danceable) tracks through some sort of dismantling process and daring you not to respect the mess they’ve made. Four on the floor all the way, save for the killer drop and build. It wants nothing more than to get your ass up and moving. 

Dinowalrus – Nuke Dukem (Mae Shi Remix).mp3

The incredibly titled Dinowalrus, a drum-and-drone duo from Brooklyn, get the re-rinse from experimental punkers and noted Los Angeleans Mae Shi, who turn DW’s athletic space rock into something that sounds like the better downtempo moments of Hybrid or Underworld. Except with more vocals. Blissful beat-based psychedelia that makes a serious play for the role of “driving music.” East meets West and everybody wins! 

Pigface – Chikasaw.mp3

I’ve featured this before, but no video exists for this fine track, which is a nice change of pace from industrial supergroup Pigface’s normal brand of grinding heroin rock. Featuring the female vocal talents of Lesley Rankine (of Ruby, a collaboration with Skinny Puppy member Mark Walk) and features a slow-building, nearly dub-like pace. It’s all about fending off complacency and changing the world around you, which would be doubly inspiring if it weren’t performed by a squad of drug-addicted reprobates. 

Still, it’s a hellaciously good song and a fine addition to anyone’s collection. 

Ennio Morricone – L’Estasi Del Oro (from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) [Bandini Remix].mp3
Sounds a whole lot like Morricone collaborating with Massive Attack or Juno Reactor. Bandini’s low-key remix toughens up the sound with some tasteful drums and occasional delays and drops. Makes you feel like throwing a poncho over your shoulders and swaggering down the middle of the street, which will preferably be unpaved and searing hot. Squint a bit. There you go.

Suede – Introducing the Band.mp3
If you’re going to hit the stage, there is no better intro than this track. Swaggering, bruising, bittersweet and suicidal all in one thunderous package. Normally known for their glammed-up Smith’s derivatives, Suede (or London Suede as we know them in the US – for no fucking apparent reason – some other Suede out there cranking out ambisexual glam rock stateside, I suppose) lay down a bottom-heavy foundation on which to strut their “fifty-knuckle shuffle heavy metal machine.”

Parents, lock up your daughters. And your sons. The British re-invasion begins now.

Comprising of two Los Angeles natives, No Age set up shop at the corner of Shoegaze and College Rock. Sounding like the best parts of Ride and My Bloody Valentine underpinning the best parts of Pavement and Dinosaur Jr./Sebadoh without the elliptical lyrics or bizarre detunings.

Catchy as fucking hell. Like Grade A Smallpox. In your brain.

Micro Titanic – Interplanetary Hunters.mp3
Straight outta the Netherlands, it’s Micro Titanic with an attack of cut n’ paste beats that brings to mind Close (to the Edit) by the Art of Noise and Beat Dis by Bomb the Bass. All good stuff, with a great 80’s vibe and some great horn samples. And hey, at 2:37, it’s not going to wear out its welcome anytime soon.

The Abrahammer – What Was Your Childhood Like?.mp3
From the 80’s into the 90’s with your host, The Abrahammer, whose mash-up skills take the Who, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, the Rugrats theme and hit “blend smoothly.” Fun stuff. Prepare to nerd out completely around the 4:15 mark, when a very familiar videogame theme song kicks in and drags Missy Elliott  Amanda Blank (correction via the Abrahammer himself) around the block in an 8-bit Caddy.

Jay-Z vs. the Verve – Bittersweet Dirt Off Your Shoulders.mp3
From artist(s) unknown comes this blissful mashup of Bittersweet Symphony and Dirt Off Your Shoulders. It’s amazing how well Jay-Z’s anthem meshes with “the best song the Rolling Stones recorded in the last 25 years.” It’s also amazing how many royalties nobody’s earning every time this rolls.

A Place to Bury Strangers – In Your Heart (Cereal Spiller Remix).mp3
Remember how I’m always going on and on about how A Place to Bury Strangers is my new favorite band?

No?

Maybe I’m thinking of Whitey. Or you are.

Anyway, they are. They are like the Jesus and Mary Chain + My Bloody Valentine + a fuckload of noise. So: fun. This remix, however, charms the hell out of the noisy New Yorkers and takes them on a laidback and melodic spin dangerously close to the dancefloor.

Paul Dempsey – Ramona Was A Waitress (Faux Pas Remix).mp3
Faux Pas shakes up a fellow Antipodean’s tune about life, the universe and everything and turns it into something resembling a Gary Numan track making love to some sort of wonderful thing made out of flanging and phasing. Couldn’t be more pleasant and agreeably hummable.

Plus Faux Pas himself is an all-around good guy who actually stopped by here and corrected just one of my many factual errors. And he called me “Big Ears,” which I have chosen to believe is a compliment.

Cold Cave – Love Comes Close.mp3
Straight out of Rocky’s hometown by way of Manhattan comes this new synthpop combo, whose M.O. is making fucking good tracks that sound like all the best things from the early 80’s, namely early New Order, Clan of Xymox and Echo & the Bunnymen. How can you say “no” to that?

Simian Mobile Disco – Audacity of Huge (Dada Life Remix).mp3
From out of England (as is the case with most fine dance music – except when it comes out of France), SMD bring their disco strut to this track, which posits the age old complaint – “I’ve got it all, but I don’t have you.”

The difference here are the tongue-thru-cheek lyrics, which name drop everything from PM Dawn, Peter Tosh to Minidiscs and, notably, a “biodiesel dirigible.” Fun, fun, fun and all done with the swaggering overconfidence that says, “Hand me that yardstick so I can measure my cock.” Highly recommended.

PNAU – With You Forever (Fear of Tigers Mix).mp3
PNAU, whom we last heard front-mouthing for the Groove Armada on their blistering single “Warsaw,” turns in this blissfully melancholic track which cruises gorgeously into your forebrain, thanks to the incredibly sure production of Fear of Tigers.

Heavy Rotation Vol. 31 – World Tour Edition

Hello, aloha, konichiwa and all that bullshit. We’re coming to you today from all over the damn place. Germany, Japan, Australia, France, Italy and the UK. Not a single American (or Canadian) in sight today, but we all know the best music comes from beyond, especially when you indulge a conceit or my Anglophile tendencies.

Prepare to enjoy the hell out of your Sunday. It’s Around the World in 5 Tracks with your host, CLT.

Munk – No Milk (Mercury Mix)
The mysterious and German producer Munk takes Italian actress Asia Argento and heads to a low-slung dancefloor, muttering somewhat profanely about flowers (good), lemonade (not good) and milk (even worse). It would seem that something sexual/scatological is going on here, but without the key “fudge” element, one can’t be too sure.

Bonus: No Milk seems to be built on the chassis of techno one-hit wonder Nightmare by Brainbug.

The Lowbrows – Danse Macabre
Featured several weeks back with their bruising single Linda Is Tonight, the Japanese breaks & roll duo is back, taking a wheezing, doom-laden organ and some errant horns for a run through the Chemical Brothers back catalog (in particular Chemical Beats).

Of course it shouldn’t work! Why would it? But it does, splendidly, despite nearly derailing itself a few times.

Prodigy – Invaders Must Die (Yuksek Mix)
Proud Frenchman and producer Yuksek grabs the Prodigy’s robo-thuggery and beats it into something you almost wouldn’t be ashamed to take home and meet your mum.

That’s the power of a great remix for you: turning a known quantity into something unexpected, rather than just another 4/4-beaten dead horse.

Eskimo Joe – London Bombs (Sneaky Sound System Mix)
Flowing and melodic, like a danceable Coldplay, Australian band Eskimo Joe gets rubbed all the right ways by fellow Aussie producers Sneaky Sound System. Lightweight to a fault perhaps, but see if you don’t catch this tune running unattended (and with scissors!) through your head a few weeks from now.

Faux Pas – Silver Line
Something must be going on Down Under. (If it’s Sunday, it means it’s time for a lazy sexual joke. And that is one lazy joke.) Another Australian producer, Faux Pas whips up something sounding like Ulrich Schnauss backing Bjork. This truly is dreampop of the highest order.

As the blissed-out synths crash against the anchoring throb/thump of the bass, the unnamed vocalist delivers a series of nearly unintelligible syllables. As the track gathers steam, the vocals coalesce briefly before shattering brightly across the cascading layers of synth-wash below.

Bonus: his previous album has one of The Greatest Album Titles Ever: Entropy Begins at Home.

Nothing going on here but the music. No tenuous threads tying these tracks together. Just good, solid tunes with what gamers refer to as “high replayability.” Like Peggle for your ears, I suppose.

Sparks – Frankly Scarlett, I Don’t Give a Damn
The worst moustache in the business meets some of the brightest and smartest pop in the world. The Sparks take on a Southern legend with the purest of worst intentions, taking the jilted and none-too-pleased side of things. Catchy as hell and with some of the best couplets/triplets(?) ever written:

That soft southern accent
Delivered without the slightest trace of a British accent
Even that’s starting to wear on me

and this, which I’m dying to use out of context somewhere:

We cut each other so much slack
That we were both falling over backwards

!!! – Take Ecstasy With Me (Magnetic Fields cover)
The most plaintive of love songs, wherein love is replaced with lust and lust is altered chemically. New York’s funksters !!! take Stephen Merritt’s ode to the downside of unpopular lifestyle choices (“we got beat up just for holding hands”) and turn it into an ode to the simple pleasures of getting fucked up with someone else. Loads of additions to the original lyrics drive the point home:

I’ve got a new kaleidoscope and I’ve got a stack of records
It’s all in your head so don’t doubt it
We could have fun just listening to your pulse

Balkan Beat Box – Bulgarian Chicks (INSPKTR Bootleg Mix)
Normally when I hear the phrase “world music,” I start looking for the exit and elbowing my way past Paul Simon fans and various members of Vampire Weekend. The Balkan Beat Box, founded by ex-Gogol Bordello member Ori Kaplan, takes all the chin-stroking and masturbatory SWPL-ness out of it and shows everyone (including me) how all these disparate ingredients can rock the dance floor. Funky, fun and highly recommended to close-minded bloggers everywhere.

Soulwax – Any Minute Now (Vote Whitey Mix)
Time to combine two of my favorite things: the dance-rock express that is Soulwax with the main man of all things fucking great, Whitey. Prepare to have your lids flipped by Whitey’s undeniable backbeat and general electronic wizardry.

Whitey – Individuals
Speaking of fucking great, here’s yet another fucking great track from Whitey. Just another day at work for the master, combining an a distorted electro loop that defines the word “crunchy” with some great drumwork and a great set of cynical lyrics directed at all those people who insist on showing their uniqueness by doing what everyone else is doing:

I see places

Where all the smart people go to stand in line

Makes their lives
All perfectly designed
For killing time

Heavy Rotation 29: Both Hands on My Organ

Nothing says the holidays are upon us like a lazy penis joke. And nothing says mid-holiday wear-and-tear like a four-sentence intro. Once again, it’s a themed Heavy Rotation. Enjoy in good health.

Electrelane – I Love You My Farfisa
All girls (well, not all girls during various permutations). All the time (not true, either, as they are on indefinitely hiatus since late 2007). To sum up: mostly girls until 2007, which gives them about a decade of rocking the intersection of Stereolab and the VU, which means fuck-all considering everyone channels Stereolab and VU.

But here’s what’s the what: the almighty power of the Farfisa organ, being pimped by four ladies straight outta Brighton. It rolls and surges and screams, building a self-fulfilling head of steam (and a bit of self-promotion too, judging by the song title). The pace picks up and the girls holler at you to “turn your transistor on.”

This track must have ripped faces off in concert, considering Electrelane’s live reputation.

Clinic – Harvest (Within You)
Clinic. Shall I compare thee to… who? They don’t really sound like anyone else out there. They’ve got a little of that late 60’s garage/psychedelia going on, like the soundtrack to a “freakout” scene in a cheapie Corman flick. You know, the kind of track that fits but doesn’t sound expensive.

And yet, they’re incredibly good. Ade Blackburn’s for mumbling syllables doesn’t help the comparisons. He could be like a less-nasal Dylan as he gets about as elliptical but there’s no sense of underlying conscience or poetry. He just seems to be trying to convey emotions and scenery with tones alone. His band backs him up, clothed in scrubs and surgical masks, laying down some imaginative percussion and, of course, some killer organ highlights to turn Clinic into the indefinably great.

 

Breakbot – Happy Rabbit
Another day, another laptop producer. Following the “all hands on deck” approach to genres, Paris native Breakbot splices castoff pieces from breaks, surf, electro and sunshiney-pop into a warm and inviting little chunk of ear candy. The organ colors the bubbling electronics and slides across the rubbery funk basslines.

Charlatans UK – The Only One I Know
Of all the tracks in this Rotation, The Only One I Know is probably the one everybody knows. The Norm of early-90s alternative rock, The Only One I Know features the Charlatans “me too” entry into the “baggy” sweepstakes.

And what an entry. All airy, echoey vocals, propulsive bass, shuffling backbeat and the heavy organ dosage. The Charlatans drop their Hammond all over the place, adding a layer of 60’s swagger to the sexed-up rhythm section.

Mind the drop. It’s a killer. Down to just the bass. Then the drums. And finally…. the Hammond roars back to life dragging the track all over the dancefloor with the guitars in hot pursuit.

Yo La Tengo – Sudden Organ
The name says it all. All organ. All the time. Yo La Tengo fashions a shoegazer masterpiece out of little more than a Hammond organ and some spare drum work. If this doesn’t sell you on the power of a well-used organ, nothing will. And that includes porn.

Heavy Rotation Vol. 28

Well, it’s that time of year. Only x number of days left until Xmas. (x=not enough)

As an alternative to my usual rambling introduction, I’d like to instead highlight my blog partner, RF Interference. While he may not be able to squeeze in a post edgewise, he did outdo pretty much everything I’ve done this year with this:

Thanks to RF, I am now the proud owner of an autographed copy of FIRE ICE: A Kurt Austin Adventure by none other than CLIVE FUCKING CUSSLER. How awesome is that.

Let me just give you a small excerpt of Mssr. Cussler’s prowess:

“Sandecker flashed a barracuda smile, but an icy coldness crept into his authoritative blue eyes as he prepared to rip Tingley to shreds.”

The man has never met an adjective he didn’t like.

Thanks for that, RF. Truly an awesome gift.

Kraftwerk – Ohm Sweet Ohm
Last time Kraftwerk made an appearance in the Heavy Rotation, they were using banks of vintage electronics to crank out Black Sabbath-esque heavy metal. This time around they’re wringing raw emotion from their collections of wires and chips.

Much like Trans-Europe Express, Ohm Sweet Ohm works as a travelling analogue. The pace starts slow, as if moving tentatively but picks up the pace as it nears its destination. It calls to mind someone making a long journey back to someone they love, having been away far too long. The first moments are almost hopeless, as though the distance is too far and will never be reached, but as the trip continues and the destination nears, the pace and elation increase, anticipating the reunion.

Magnetic Fields – Yeah Oh Yeah
Well, I don’t mean to go so dark so fast, but don’t let Stephen Merritt’s perma-funk scare you away. As the mind behind the Magnetic Fields, Merritt has cranked out hundreds of darkly funny/tragic love songs. Well, love is often the key, but it’s usually unrequited or completely gone.

This ode to the creeping hate of a long-dead relationship comes soaked in reverb and features a duet/duel from the two protagonists. You know, just for a little added heartbreak. Has a bit of a Galaxie 500 feel to it, all airy vocals and lightly strummed (and lightly distorted).

I’ve enjoyed making you
miserable for years
found peace of mind in
playing on your fears
How I loved to catch your gold
and silver tears, but now my dear
What a dark and dreary life
Are you reaching for a knife?
Could you really kill your wife?
Yeah Oh, yeah

Imperial Teen – Copafeelia
God help me, I loves me some Imperial Teen. All power-pop-punk with Ginsu-sharp lyrics and hummable melodies. From their debut album Seasick, Copafeelia is yet another acidic kiss-off to some fool who spends too much time “cutting out their paper friends.”

This will get stuck in your head and hold on for the drop to bass and drum about 3/4’s thru, which will makes you wonder why more bands don’t do that sort of thing all the time. (It worked wonders for the Charlatans UK’s biggest hit The Only One I Know…)

Marilyn Manson – This Is The New Shit (Goldfrapp Mix)
At first, this sounds like any other Manson track, all drums and distorted vocals. But listen closely. Alison Goldfrapp (the britchesless beauty from a couple of weeks ago) joins in, layering her breathy, sex-on-wheels voice over his, occasionally taking the lead. Her contribution adds a much-needed contrast to Mr. Manson’s overwrought shouting.

But what makes this essential? Wait for it. At about 3:20 in, be prepared to hold on to your fucking preconceived notions. Goldfrapp takes over and drags Manson’s dope rock back into a smoky 1930’s nightclub and begins channeling Marlene Dietrich. If you ain’t heard someone seductively croon “Are you motherfuckers ready?” then you just ain’t lived yet.

Meterhead – Let It Go
Speaking of time warps, here’s Meterhead with a dancefloor killer that drags Def Leppard’s pop-metal into the new millenium, taking everything good about them (chanty, slogan-esque vocals, compressed guitar) and chopping the hell out of it.

This much fun should be illegal (and due to stupid copyright laws, it probably is). If there was any justice in the world, this track would be required to soundtrack any movie club scenes for the next 3-5 years. I can totally see Blade chopping up vampires to this.

Heavy Rotation Vol. 27 – Bootlegger’s Delight

As promised/threatened, a Heavy Rotation full of mashups and bootlegs. It’s a magical place where 1+1 = whatever you want it to be. Get ready to sing along as frontin’ mcs find themselves draped all over beats and melodies they wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot Roland 808.

Diamonds – Margherita Hustle
First up, we have two selections from Diamonds, an omnipresent fixture of the Chicago/Milwaukee electro scene. The first selection drops Rick Ross over a lighthearted and bubbly late period Herb Alpert sort of track. I have no idea who provides the backing music and can’t seem to find more info anywhere. If anyone knows what it is, I’d be somewhat eternally grateful (based on trends toward immortality).

Diamonds – Miami Vice Unit
The second selection finds 50 Cent’s G-Unit riding shotgun with Jan Hammer in a speeding cigarette boat. Not as infectious as the previous track, but still a hell of a lot of fun.

DJ Paul V – Tequila Lip Gloss (Lil Mama vs. the Champs)
Does what it says on the tin. Lil Mama’s ode to beauty products gets busy with some incredibly drunk faux-Mexicans. And everyone always says nothing good comes from pounding tequila all night long (Tia Tequila notwithstanding).

Fat Joe & Lil Wayne vs. Hot Butter – Make It Rain Popcorn (DJ Johnatron Edit)
Hey kids! Selling drugs provides the sellers with mad cash! Mad cash they will soon be throwing wildly around in the club! I mean, in da club!

Get down to the novelty disco sounds of Hot Butter and throw down with the baddest pushers this side of legality.

Lil Jon vs. Zombie Nation – Act A Fool (Flosstradamus “Ravestradamus” Mix)
Flosstradamus does us all an inadvertent favor, dragging Lil Jon crack-addled hollering into the nearest rave. Tales of drunken shenanigans mesh pleasurably with Zombie Nation’s inescapable hit, which should soon have you rapping like you’ve never rapped before and chanting rhythmically like you haven’t since Blur released Song #2.
