Top 50 Tracks of 2010: Black Books – The Big Idea

10. Black Books – The Big Idea.mp3

A slow-building, burning from the inside epic, The Big Idea grows and grows, coming on like a sunrise telling you it’s time to get home. It’s a creeper, smoldering under some simple synth lines and evocative guitar growls. Just when you think that’s as far as it’s going, the chorus arrives, expanding temporarily before ceding to the rising guitar.

The real magic begins in the second chorus when it drops to just vocals and a synth swirl. Then the guitar returns, switching gears from “understated” to “dominating”, while Black Books’ lead singer Rosco’s vocals rise to the challenge, delivering a line that’s more desperation than promise:

You can have anything you want.”

The rest of the Top 50.

  1. Holy Baby Jesus Batman! This one is badasstabulous!

    • It is. It’s impossibly huge without being all in your face, like Rush. Or Yes. Or Muse.

    • You say that like it’s a bad thing. “Being like Rush” is quite the compliment, provided you’re talking about the band, not the in-your-face pinhead of the same name.

Don’t make me go all Hemispheres on your ass!

  2. It is sad they are on myspace. They need a legit record deal and probably legit management.

Why the dig at their management? Because it can’t be that difficult to sell real talent.

    • It’s really sad that anyone is on myspace. To be fair, they’re also on bandcamp, which is much better all around.

Dig seconded. How often do you hear something like this and find yourself wondering why more people aren’t listening to it? Too often, lately. With digital distribution, an interweb and a million ideas popping up every day, it’s a shame that true talent often lies on the fringes, swept aside by me-too pop tarts and their marketing machines.

  3. Don’t worry guys, we’re releasing a limited edition green vinyl 10″ EP on Shifting Sounds Feb 15th. email blackbooksband@gmail.com if you’d like us to keep you posted on the release. Thanks for listening!

    • Thanks very much for the update. You’ve got an amazing amount of talent and I hope 2K11 leads to bigger and better things for you.

  4. Schtupping music. 🙂

    • No doubt that was Black Books’ intention all along: makeout music for the mutually disaffected.

    • Yeah, but what isn’t?

  5. I snuck out and took a piss while waiting for it to get into gear, but pretty good.

    • It’s a slow burn but it’s a good burn. It’s worth the wait.
