Jonny Greenwood’s stuttering bark of guitar distortion before the chorus of Radiohead’s “Creep.”
Rumors have it that Jonny hated the song and was just trying out a little audio sabotage, but rarely has a dynamic shift been so perfectly telegraphed (and I am including the Pixies in this comparison). The guttural punctuation (!…!) sends the signal out clearly: yeah, we’ve been humming and strumming to this point, but we are now ready to deliver our payload of one(1) metric fuckload of guitar.
This come close. The downright hummable verse gets sucker-punched by the drum machine and a left-right combo of feedback and distortion.
